Au temps des carolingiens, elle était une des cinq magistratures de Saintonge avec Aulnay, Saintes, Saint-Julien de l'Escap et Talmont.<br> Archiac eut deux églises au moins, l'une appelée « Saint-Martin au château », l'autre « Saint-Pierre » se trouvait dans le quartier Saint-Pierre actuel.<br> L'une des églises fut entièrement démolie pendant les guerres de religions, on en a retrouvé quelques vestiges dans la maçonnerie des maisons du «plateau», où une pierre porte l'inscription: « En 1570, je fus par des soldats saccagée et brûlée, deux ans après je fus réédifiée. Vivons en paix. Qu'il n'advienne plus.»<br> En 1582, la liste des paroisses de «l'Archi prieur» d'Archiac ne mentionne que «Saint-Martin au château.» Saint-Pierre, déjà en ruine fut complètement détruit en 1796.<br> L'église Saint-Pierre actuelle, à l'ouest du bourg, se dresse à l'emplacement du temple calviniste. D’un édifice encore antérieur subsistent deux<br> Contreforts du XVe siècle, visibles dans la sacristie, et les colonnettes plus anciennes dans le jardin ainsi que le prieuré ont été construit par les Récollets en 1632 et 1679, comme après don du terrain par le marquis de Bourdeilles; elle fut consacrée par l’Evêque de Saintes le 15 avril 1681.<br> C'est depuis 2004, l'une des 17 églises de la paroisse de la Petite Champagne.<br> La particularité de l'église d'Archiac est d'avoir un clocher extérieur détaché de l'édifice. Erigé de 1892 à 1900, il aurait dû être suivi de la construction d'une nouvelle église dans le même style. Sa position dominante dans le paysage permet à sa flèche en pierre d'être vue de très loin. Il abrite un beffroi de 3 cloches fondues en 1 8" 99 par Bollée à Orléans.<br> La façade porte le double campanile d'origine. Les longs contreforts n'ont pas suffit à contrebuter durablement l'édifice, et malgré l'absence de cloches, la façade à dû être ceinturée par des tirants métalliques dans la première moitié du XXe siècle.<br> Dans le mur du chœur, une pierre porte l'inscription « LOP- ORATIAMINI OBSEQUIUM - CV / / ANNUETE CAROLO X - PROMOVENTIBUS ILLUSTme AC Rme D.D. »<br> « Le très illustre et magnifique Charles X donnant approbation à ceux qui proposent » (Trad.
