<p>Champagne, église Saint-André.<br>
<span class="rougevif">Champagne</span> est un village construit sur une éminence calcaire, autrefois entourée d'eau, qui s'appelait l' « Ile Blanche». La nombreuse population de marins et sauniers qui vivaient alors au sein de cette paroisse explique l'importance de l'église.<br>
Dédiée à Saint-André, l'église de Champagne était une dépendance de l'Abbaye Saint-Romain de Blaye. Edifiée principalement entre les XII et XIIIe siècles, elle est représentative de la transition entre l'art roman et l'art gothique. Au cours des siècles, elle fut à plusieurs fois modifiée.<br>
<span class="rougevif">L'édific</span>e est bâti d'ouest en est, composé d'une nef unique de quatre travées dont seul le transept sud a été réalisé. Les églises étaient « orientées » (tournées vers l'est), de manière à être dans l'axe du soleil au matin de la fête patronale afin que le chœur soit inondé de lumière au maximum.<br>
<span class="cyan gras">L'intérieur: </span><br>
<span class="rougevif">La partie la plus ancienne</span> est constituée des deux premières travées occidentales voûtées en berceau brisé du XIIe siècle. De chaque côté du mur s'élèvent des arcs qui se rejoignent à leur sommet. Ces deux premières travées témoignent de beaucoup d'hésitations dans les choix architecturaux. Au sommet des colonnes, certains tailloirs sont orientés à 45°. Sur les piles séparant les deuxième et troisième travées, à l'est comme à l'ouest, se trouvent des colonnettes qui ne portent rien. Les croisées d'ogives que l'on s'attend à y trouver n'apparaissent que dans les deux travées orientales, du début du XIIIe siècle, début de l'art gothique.<br>
Les chapiteaux des deux premières travées sont à décor de feuillages et de palmettes.<br>
<span class="rougevif">Mais</span> le plus intéressant d'entre eux est le premier à droite en entrant, représentant une « Vierge à l'Hostie», comme à Dampierre.<br>
<span class="rougevif">Les deux travées</span> orientales, d'époque gothique (tout début du XIIIe siècle), sont en croisées d'ogives simples et quadripartites. Les ogives sont des arcs diagonaux qui partagent la voûte, imaginés par les constructeurs gothiques pour renforcer la voûte d'arêtes romane (avec des longitudinaux et transversaux). Les voûtes reposent sur des piliers renforcés à l'extérieur de lourds contreforts, et non d'arcs-boutants comme ce sera le cas plus tard dans l'art gothique flamboyant.<br>
Au sud de la troisième travée, le clocher surmonte une chapelle à voûtes d'ogives du début du XIIIe siècle pourvue d'une <?php affiche_lexique('absidiole','');?>, la « Chapelle de la Vierge ».<br>
<span class="rougevif">Le chœur, </span> de vaste ampleur, est édifié dans le prolongement de la nef. Il est voûté de cinq quartiers rayonnants dont les nervures convergent vers la clef. Avec ses trois hautes fenêtres, dont le vitrail central représente Saint-André, patron de la paroisse, il est d'une très belle élégance. Il a souvent été copié dans les églises ou les chapelles du XIXe siècle, comme à Fouras ou à l'hôpital de Saintes.<br>
<span class="rougevif">Sous les dalles</span> de l'entrée murée de l'église, à proximité de l'ancien cimetière qui cernait le bâtiment, se trouve une crypte funéraire voûtée d'ogives. Construite pour recueillir les squelettes en surnombre du cimetière primitif lors de son utilisation à l'époque médiévale, ce lieu était destiné à des inhumations secondaires, ce qui permettait de réutiliser des espaces funéraires, tout en assurant un lieu de repos décent aux ossements. Il existe un soupirail au nord de cette salle, qui servait à l'introduction des ossements depuis la surface.<br>
<span class="cyan gras">L'extérieur:</span><br>
<span class="rougevif">La façade ouest:</span> d'époque romane, il n'en reste que le haut avec son ample fenêtre ornée des fameuses marguerites saintongeaises à huit pétales et accotée de deux petites arcades. Le contrefort de gauche recèle un escalier qui montait à un hourd de bois (galerie de bois établie autrefois en encorbellement au sommet des murailles) dont les soutiens venaient d'appuyer sur les corbeaux (grosses pièces de bois ou de pierre en saillie sur le parement d'un mur pour soutenir l'extrémité d'une poutre ou une corniche) dont l'un représente une tête de femme à haute coiffe.<br>
La porte d'entrée actuelle ne date que du XVIIIe siècle: la date de 1763 est inscrite sur la clef de voûte. En effet le portail roman, aujourd'hui muré, s'ouvrait jadis au nord de la première travée.<br>
<span class="rougevif">Portail latéral Nord:</span> l'ancienne porte murée donnait autrefois sur le cimetière. Il est très riche en symbolique en ce sens, revêtu d'une fine décoration sur les trois voussures qui le surmonte. Les deux premiers rinceaux sont ornés de palmettes et de chimères, le plus petit est à décor de marguerites saintongeaises à huit pétales (très communes dans l'art roman saintongeais). Les deux corbeaux au-dessus de ce portail ont dû porter la poutre d'un « ballet » (auvent) qui protégeait des intempéries au sortir de la messe.<br>
<span class="rougevif">Sur les chapiteaux, </span> travaillés comme les jambages, des dragons et des animaux divers se mêlent aux ornements végétaux.<br>
Au départ de la troisième voussure à droite, un fier coq stylisé, tourné vers le soleil levant, annonce la victoire de la lumière sur les ténèbres, du Christ ressuscité sur la mort et le péché. À gauche, en face, un redoutable dragon, taillé dans trois claveaux et qui s'appuie sur une femme dont deux serpents (symbole de la luxure) mordent les seins, représente le prince des ténèbres voulant garder son emprise sur les âmes des pécheurs.<br>
Une double arcature en plein cintre surmonte le tout et réalise un ensemble fort remarquable.<br>
<span class="rougevif">Entre les deux arcs, </span> le centaure, signe du zodiaque correspondant à la fête patronale (30 novembre, Saint-André). Remarquez que ce personnage mythique tend son arc dont la flèche, contrairement à l'iconographie habituelle, part vers l'arrière! Or la flèche d'un centaure représente un rayon de soleil. Ici, elle est donc bien dans le sens du soleil levant, donnant encore l'image de la lumière du Christ ressuscité.<br>
Cette travée et la suivante, ajourées de petites fenêtres romanes, sont complétées à leur sommet par une corniche à chanfrein sculptée sur des mordillons variés d'une bonne exécution.<br>
<span class="rougevif">Le mur à la suite</span>, d'une autre époque, a des fenêtres légèrement brisées avec des chapiteaux à crochets.<br>
Le clocher, rebâti sur le côté sud de la nef, est dans un style de transition roman par son allure extérieure: tour flanquée d'arcs en plein cintre, longues fenêtres à colonnettes, gothique par ses voûtes intérieures croisées d'ogives. Comme souvent dans les églises romanes, sa position souligne l'emplacement d'un transept peu accusé. La cloche porte la date de 1607.<br>
Tout en admirant l'harmonie de l'<?php affiche_lexique('abside','');?>, remarquez le petit chapiteau en haut de la colonne de gauche de la première fenêtre nord: un superbe visage traduisant la sérénité d'une belle âme de foi en paix avec son Dieu.<br>
Cette église a été classée monument historique le 25 février 1925. </p>
