<p>La Couarde-sur-Mer, église Notre-Dame de l’Annonciation.<br>
Que sait-on sur les origines de La Couarde ?<br>
Peu de choses en vérité, si ce n'est qu'il existait, pense-t-on à cet endroit, dès le XIe siècle un hameau de sauniers et de pêcheurs. Plus tard, d'après Jourdan, mention est faite de cette agglomération en 1394. D'après lui toujours, une chapelle existait en 1476, peut-être s'agit-il de celle qui aurait été détruite en 1574. Reconstruite au début du XVIIe siècle la nouvelle chapelle qui comprenait un chœur éclairé par trois fenêtres, des piliers dans la nef, une petite sacristie à côté du grand autel, tomba en ruine vers 1740.<br>
La population tout entière se mobilisa pour la construction d'une nouvelle église; là chacun, selon ses aptitudes et l'élan de son cœur, se fit pour les besoins de la cause, qui maçon, qui charpentier. Elle fut bientôt reconstruite. C'était un édifice plus vaste que l'église actuelle comprenant d'ouest en est, un vestibule suivi d'une nef longue de trente-deux mètres. L'ensemble était voûté et la façade large d'environ dix mètres était percée d'un portail, surmonté d'un clocher mûr à une baie.<br>
Pendant la première moitié du XIXe siècle, l'édifice se dégrada; le 7 juin 1850, une partie de la toiture s'effondra. L'église fut étayée de partout et fermée au culte en juin 1857.<br>
De 1857 à 1867, les offices furent célébrés dans un chai aménagé en chapelle au numéro 70 de la Grande Rue. À l'entrée, on y plaça une croix en pierre blanche d'environ un mètre vingt de haut.<br>
Cette chapelle est mentionnée dans plusieurs écrits sous l’appellation d’église provisoire.<br>
Après l'ajournement de plusieurs projets, le 11 avril 1865 fut donné sur l'emplacement de l'ancien édifice, le premier coup de pioche des fondations de notre église actuelle.<br>
Les travaux durèrent deux ans. Cela coûta sous toutes formes à la commune soixante-dix mille francs payables en 15 ans.<br>
L'abbé Boulineau, curé de la paroisse pendant trente-deux ans, y célébra ta première messe le jour de Noël 1867 alors que l'aménagement intérieur n'était pas terminé. La cloche hissée dans ta flèche quatre jours plus tard pouvait à nouveau appeler les fidèles à ta prière.<br>
L’abbé Boullneau pouvait à cette époque compter sur une chorale, deux chantres, un Suisse, un sacristain, douze enfants de chœur dont six titulaires.<br>
La fête patronale principale était la fête de 1'Annonciation célébrée le premier dimanche libre après la Quasimodo. Saint-Roch était également patron du lieu et cela depuis fort longtemps, sa fête se célébrait le dimanche suivant 1'Assomption.<br>
La maxime «Liberté-Egalité-Fraternité» fut gravée au fronton de cette église pour 1'anniversaire du premier centenaire de la Révolution de 1789. </p>
